Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Friday sent his condolences to the government and people of Tanzania after 62 people died when a ferry  sank off Zanzibar two days ago.

“President Zuma has also expressed his support... in their continued efforts to rescue the survivors and indicated South Africa's readiness to assist where possible,” a statement by the Department of International Relations said.

“President Zuma also wished the injured a speedy recovery.”

The vessel, carrying 291 passengers and crew, including 30 children, sank on Wednesday after leaving Tanzania's commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

At least 146 people had been rescued. - Sapa
