AKURE—National Association of Ondo State Students,NAOSS, yesterday, took exception to politicians in the state playing politics with the death of the three student union leaders who died in an auto crash, weekend.

In a statement, its National President, Victor Oguntoyinbo,  in Akure, the students’ body  said it was unfortunate that some politicians were blaming the state government for the ill-fated crash.

The students, who died in the road mishap were the Student Union Presidents of Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA; Awopegba Oluwaseun, popularly known as “DCO”, Adeyemi College of Education,ACE, Akintola Abiodun and that of Ondo State School of Midwifery Miss Oyikan Olotu.

The students were returning from an award ceremony organised in honour of Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja by the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS.

Oguntoyinbo while commerating with the families and the institution of the student union leaders, dispelled claims by some people that the students were invited to Abuja for the award programme by the governor.

He said the students attended the programme based on the invitation sent to them by NANS national executives.

The statement reads in part, “The award programme was organised by National Association of Nigerian Students, which is the apex body for all Nigerian students both home and in diaspora. It is mandatory for NANS to invite all student leaders across the globe, which Ondo State students were not exempted.

“Governor Olusegun Mimiko did not invite us to the award programme to show its popularity among the students of Ondo State; we attended the programme on the basis of invitation sent by National Association of Nigerian Students.

“We are urging some politicians who are using this pathetic incident to gain cheap popularity to desist from it or else Ondo State students we moved against them.”
